課程概述

Optogenetics, chosen as the "Method of the Year" in 2010 by Nature Methods and highlighted in the article on “Breakthroughs of the Decade” in Science, has revolutionized the way neuroscientists study the function of neural circuits underlying behaviors. Optogenetic approach is a powerful research approach to map neural circuits and study their functional roles. It is the combination of genetic and optical methods to allow reversibly control neuronal activity in targeted cells or circuits of living brain in the millisecond timescale. The field of optogenetics has made remarkable progress in mapping functional neural circuits and shown tremendous impact on behavioral neuroscience research. The course aims to enable students to understand the concepts of research questions, methodology and experimental designs through reading important optogenetic research literature focusing on the behavioral functions of neural circuits.

課程目標
The primary goal of the course is to provide students with a broad understanding of how to employ optogenetics in mouse model system to investigate neural circuits function, and help students develop an appreciation of the neural basis of complex behaviors.
課程要求
Preparation and participation: students taking this course will be required to do a considerable amount of literature reading each week; to present assigned literature; and take an active part in classroom discussions.
Each week, all students will be required to do the “essential reading” as uploaded in Dropbox. In addition, two individual students will be given responsibility to summarize the argument of that week’s assigned literature.

The quality and extent of students’ participation in class, together with the individual student’s presentation, will count for 90% of the final grade. Each student will be required to finish a single page of student evaluation report on the design of the course and to provide feedback to the instructor for future adjustment. The report will count for the remaining 10% of the grade. The report is due on the last week of the course.
